ccidents are bound to occur sooner or later, especially, with increasing flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on our roads. An accident, as the very etymology of the word indicates, is a 'happenstance', something that may occur through no deliberate fault of yours. It may occur through the rashness or the miscalculation on the part of the other driver or of the pedestrian involved. But you may be blamed. Well, if an accident occurs within the limits of your own village or town, there are sure to be some fellow cabbies around to rush to your help. But what if you are on the highway, or in an unknown locality, you are helpless.

In the cities there are Taxi-Driver’s Associations where you may have your vehicles  and your driving license etc. registered. In case of an accident you can contact the nearest offices of this association and they will come to your rescue. There is also the Automobile Association of India where private car owners have their vehicle etc. registered. This association too comes to the rescue of any of its members involved in accident.

But the poor taxi car drivers have no such help-lines at their service. In the event of an accident, unless he turns round and wheels off, he may be the victim of mob justice.  Hence SARATHI that works for the welfare of these our poor guides and guardians on our trips, are working on two projects that will greatly help our cabbies.

1.     Issue of an identity card to each taxi driver who registers himself and his vehicle number at its office, where the matter will be computerized. This identity card is also used by him to benefit a certain amount of discount on various spare parts of the vehicle bought from the Siveri Automobile Co., Cochin and its branches all over Kerala. The proprietor of Siveri Automobile Co., willingly came forward to join hand with the SARATHI volunteers to help the poor taxi car drivers.

2.     Issue stickers with appropriate logos. The stickers stuck on the cars will enable the taxi-drivers to spot their fellows, whom they can approach for help in an emergency.

Through these two measures SARATHI hopes to foster a sense of belonging and mutual co-operation among the hitherto helpless taxi-drivers.
